I'm an ADHD Entrepreneur and I'm Burning Out. What Kind of Help Should I Look For?

Usually, you need two kinds of help, often at the same time. Clinical support from a doctor or licensed therapist can support your health, while an ADHD business coach with operations depth can redesign how your business runs and lower the load causing burnout.

Rest matters. But rest alone doesn't fix the problem if you return to the same systems and the same demands.

Why doesn't rest alone hold?

Burnout often comes from trying to run a business on systems built for a different brain. Every decision routes through you. Your calendar ignores your energy. You rely on urgency to get started, then pay for it with a crash.

A vacation can lower the load for a week. When you return, the systems put it back.

That doesn't mean your ADHD brain is the problem. I believe the problem is neurotypical systems that don't account for how you work, what drains you, or how much capacity you actually have. If the business depends on you making every decision and pushing through every task, resting won't change what happens next.

The goal isn't to become better at tolerating an unsustainable setup. It's to get support for your health and change the way the work is organized.

What are the two kinds of help, and what is each for?

Clinical support is for your health. Talk with a doctor or licensed therapist, especially if your sleep, health, or mood are slipping. Burnout can affect more than your workload, and a qualified professional can help you assess what kind of care you need.

My work is not therapy. I don't diagnose, and I'm not a crisis service. I keep a referral network of licensed professionals because clinical support and business support serve different purposes.

Operational help is for the way the business runs. Look for an ADHD business coach who can assess and redesign your operations, not only offer encouragement or general accountability. Coaching certification alone doesn't tell you whether someone can find bottlenecks, reduce decision load, and build workable systems.

A good fit should start with a diagnostic before a plan. The coach should look at how work moves through your business and what is asking too much of you. They should build systems around your energy and capacity, not assume that motivation or more effort will solve the problem.

Listen for the way they talk about burnout. If the answer is to hustle harder, do more, or try harder, that may leave the system causing the burnout untouched. You need support that helps change the system, not blame you for struggling inside it.

What does operational help for burnout actually look like?

My sequence is Clarity → Energy → Momentum. Each step answers a different question: What's draining you? What can your capacity support? How do the changes keep working?

Clarity: First, find what's actually draining you. That might be decisions only you can make, or recurring work that currently runs on willpower. Before changing the plan, we need to see where the load sits.

Energy: Then rebuild the calendar and workload around your real capacity. Hand off the draining decisions first. A useful system should make it easier to do the work that needs you and reduce the work that doesn't.

Momentum: Finally, make the changes hold after the first burst of relief fades. A calmer week is helpful. The aim is a business that doesn't quietly rebuild the same pressure as soon as things get busy again.

Every Rebel Method engagement opens with a two-hour week-one diagnostic across six domains. Those include Energy & Capacity Design and Decision Load & Bottlenecks, alongside Offer & Pricing, Demand & Pipeline, Delivery & Fulfillment, and Visibility & Controls. The Rebel Method is 12 weeks of 1:1 work in three tiers: Foundation ($7,000), Growth ($10,000), and Scale ($15,000).

I spent twelve years in operations at Microsoft, Zillow, and T-Mobile. My background includes an MBA, PMP, Six Sigma Black Belt, and Prosci Change Management certification. I use that operations depth to understand how the business is working before recommending changes.

This is not a request to force yourself into a system that keeps draining you. It's a chance to identify what needs to change and build around the person doing the work.

What is one ten-minute first step for this week?

For three days, put a small mark next to each calendar block or task based on how it left you: drained, neutral, or energized. Don't grade yourself. Just notice what the work is asking of you.

Then pick one drained item and ask: Does this need me, a rule, or nobody?

If it needs you, that tells you something. If a rule could handle it, the task may not need another decision each time. If it needs nobody, consider whether it can come off the list.

You don't have to redesign the whole business this week. Start by making one source of load visible. The point is information, not blame.

Frequently asked questions

What kind of help should an ADHD entrepreneur look for when burning out? Usually, clinical support for health and an ADHD business coach with operations depth to reduce the load in the business. You may need both at the same time.

Is ADHD business coaching the same as therapy? No. My work is not therapy, doesn't diagnose, and isn't a crisis service. A doctor or licensed therapist provides clinical support.

Why doesn't taking a break fix ADHD founder burnout? A break can lower the load temporarily, but the same systems may put it back when you return. Changing how the business runs can address that ongoing load.
