Here's a conversation I have most weeks.

Someone books a call and says, almost apologetically, "I've already tried coaching. It didn't work." Then they brace, because they think they're telling me they're a hard case.

They're usually not. What they're telling me is that they bought the wrong category and didn't know there were four.

So let me lay them out honestly, including where mine falls short.

The short answer: ADHD life coaching works on habits and self-understanding. Accountability coaching works on follow-through. Business consulting works on processes and assumes you can run them consistently. ADHD business coaching works on the process and builds it around a brain with variable capacity. Most founders who feel failed by coaching bought one of the first three for a problem that was actually the fourth.

The comparison

ADHD life coaching

Accountability coaching

Business consulting

ADHD business coaching

Works on

Habits, routines, self-understanding

Task completion and follow-through

Business processes and strategy

Business processes, designed around variable executive function

Assumes

The problem is personal

The problem is motivation

A consistent operator

Nothing about your capacity

You get

Insight and personal systems

Check-ins and structure

A diagnosis and recommendations

A diagnosis, a rebuild, and support implementing it

Typical cost

$100 to $400 per month

$50 to $200 per month

$150 to $500 per hour

$1,300 to $10,000 per engagement

Falls short when

The problem is your business model, not your habits

The system itself is the problem

Your brain won't run the process they designed

You're pre-revenue, or the issue is genuinely personal

Best when

You're figuring out how your brain works

You know what to do and don't do it

You have consistent capacity and a process problem

Your business runs on your energy and stops when it does

What is ADHD life coaching?

ADHD life coaching works on your relationship with your own brain. Habits, routines, time perception, self-talk, and the shame that tends to arrive with a late diagnosis.

It's genuinely valuable, and for a lot of people it's the right first step. Understanding why your brain does what it does changes how you treat yourself, and that isn't a small thing.

Where it falls short for founders: it works on the operator, not the operation. If your revenue is inconsistent because your pricing is wrong and your delivery process gets reinvented every single time, no amount of personal insight fixes that. You'll understand your patterns beautifully and still have the same business problem.

What is accountability coaching?

Accountability coaching gives you external structure. Regular check-ins, body doubling, someone who notices when you don't do the thing.

It works, and it's the cheapest option here. For ADHD brains in particular, external accountability genuinely compensates for weak internal follow-through. I'm not being polite about that, it's a real mechanism.

Where it falls short for founders: it assumes you already know what to do and just aren't doing it. Sometimes that's exactly right. But if you have twenty competing priorities and no signal for which one matters, accountability makes you execute faster on the wrong thing. And it does nothing at all when the underlying system is what keeps collapsing.

What is traditional business consulting?

A consultant analyzes your business, finds where it's breaking, and recommends changes. Good ones are worth every dollar. Process diagnosis is a real discipline with real methodology behind it, and I spent twelve years doing exactly that at Microsoft, Zillow, and T-Mobile.

Where it falls short for ADHD founders: the recommendations assume a neurotypical operator.

A consultant designs you a process that requires consistent daily execution, hands it over, and leaves. It works for two weeks. Then a bad week arrives, the process has no tolerance built into it, and by the time you're functional again the whole thing has quietly collapsed.

The diagnosis was probably right. The redesign didn't account for the person running it.

What is ADHD business coaching?

ADHD business coaching does the operations work and accounts for the brain running it.

That means diagnosing where the business actually breaks: pricing, delivery, handoffs, decision load, what gets delegated and what doesn't. Then rebuilding those systems so they survive a low-capacity week instead of assuming one never comes. And coaching through implementation, because a system nobody adopts isn't a solution, it's a document.

Where it falls short: it's the most expensive option on this page, and it's the wrong spend if you're pre-revenue, still deciding what you sell, or if what you actually need is clinical support rather than business support.

What about therapy and medication?

Different category, and not an alternative to any of the above.

Therapy addresses mental health. Medication addresses symptoms. Both can be foundational, and neither is business support. Any good business coach will tell you when what you need is clinical, and none of these four should be substituting for it.

How to choose

ADHD life coaching if you're newly diagnosed and still working out how your brain operates.

Accountability coaching if you know exactly what to do, your systems work, and follow-through is the only gap.

Business consulting if you have consistent working capacity and a specific process problem.

ADHD business coaching if you already have revenue, you've tried one of the above, and the thing that keeps failing is the system rather than you.

Questions I get about this

Can I do more than one at once?Yes, and plenty of people do. Therapy plus business coaching is a common pairing, because they work on genuinely different things. Accountability coaching alongside a business rebuild also works well.

Is ADHD business coaching worth the cost?Depends what the current situation costs you. Most founders I work with are losing ten to fifteen hours a week to operational chaos: rebuilding processes they already built, redoing lost work, remaking the same decision for the fourth time. Put your hourly rate against that number. If the leak is smaller than the fee, it isn't worth it yet, and I'll tell you that.

Do I need an ADHD diagnosis? Not for coaching or consulting. You do for medication, and usually for formal workplace accommodations. Most ADHD business coaches work with self-identified clients, people waiting on assessment, and people diagnosed late.

What if I've tried coaching and it didn't work?Worth asking which kind you tried. Most people who tell me coaching failed them tried life coaching or accountability coaching for what was actually a business systems problem. That isn't a coaching failure. It's a category mismatch, and it's an easy one to make when nobody explains there are four categories.
